Chapter Thirteen

Tom watched as Kalon’s raptor grabbed Urshi, closed its jaws down and broke Urshi’s neck. Then he saw Kalon gently lower Urshi’s body to the ground, and they both shifted back into their human forms.

Seeing Kalon leaning over Urshi, hugging his cousin, Tom slowly made his way over to his mate. Unsure what to do, Tom wrapped his arms around Kalon to offer him comfort.

“What happened?” Tom asked quietly.

“It was his parents.” Kalon said after a moment, his voice heavy with sadness. “They abused him when he didn’t shift into the king. It destroyed something in him, it took away the person I grew up with, leaving behind the monster he became.”

“Why?” Tom was stunned at that. “It’s not like you guys get to decide who will be king, that’s up to fate, or whatever gods you believe in.”

“I know,” Kalon sadly said, gently lowering Urshi’s body to the ground. He closed Urshi’s eyes and said a prayer over his body.

“Come on.” Tom encouraged Kalon to get up. “Let’s go get you something to wear, then we can take Urshi back to the city. We can see about getting his body home for burial. I don’t know what your customs are, but let’s honor them.”

Tom help Kalon to stand, then waited until he was ready to move into the house. Once inside, Ysor brought some clothing over for Kalon.

Tom gathered the clothing, then looked to Ysor.

“I’m going to take my mate and get him cleaned up. Stay here and guard the house.” Tom told him. “Have some of the men take care of the other bodies in the yard but treat Urshi with care. We’re going to take him back to be buried according to your customs.”

Tom took Kalon into the bathroom. He pumped some cold water and partially filled the tub and then got some hot water from the tank next to the wood burning stove, and added it to the tub. Once it was warm enough, he got Kalon into the water. Tom reached for a cloth and the soap, then calmly washed all the blood off his mate. Once his body and face were clean, Tom grabbed the shampoo and washed Kalon’s hair. Once Kalon was clean, Tom had him stand up and he grabbed a towel.

As soon as Tom got him dry, he quietly helped Kalon get dressed, passing him pieces of clothing, then helping him with doing up the buttons and such. Once Kalon was done, Tom quickly dried himself and threw his clothes back on. When he was dressed, they stood there quietly, holding one another.

“I love you.” Kalon softly said to him. “When I saw him moving in your direction, all I could think about was stopping him. I just couldn’t see living a moment in this life without you in it.”

Tom reached up and gently held Kalon’s face in his hands. “I love you, too. I don’t know how it happened so fast, but I mean it.” Tom pulled Kalon down, giving him a soft kiss, letting him know that he was there with him, that he wasn’t alone.
